Heavy rains evoke November memories in Hanoi

Heavy rains that lashed the capital city from Thursday night until Friday morning, reminded Hanoi residents of the historic flooding last November.

Traffic on Nguyen Van Cu Street in the north of the city stood still during the morning as the water levels stood a meter high, and vehicles lined up for almost four kilometers.

Many spots in the city were 0.4 to 0.8 meters under water, and commuters trying to avoid flooded streets only worsened the traffic by running this way and that.

Ngoc Khanh Lake overflowed and flooded Nguyen Chi Thanh Street that runs along its banks.

Traffic in the city center, including Le Lai and Tran Nguyen Han streets around Sword Lake, was also paralyzed.

Motorbikes broke down and bike mechanics had a good time earning VND20,000-30,000 (US$1.13-1.69) for cleaning and drying spark plugs.

A motorist who was stuck on the street said the flooding was just “a distant second to last November” when 22 people were killed.

The traffic limped back toward normalcy in the afternoon after the Hanoi Drainage Company deployed 1,000 employees and scores of water pumps to drain out the flooded streets.

Nguyen Le, general director of the company, said construction at several ditches was partly responsible for the flooding.

The Central Hydrometeorology Forecast Center has predicted heavy rainfall over the next two days in the northeastern region including Hanoi.
